Like Obelix's faithful companion, Dogmatix, I cry when a tree is felled. Imagine how I feel with all these forest fires? Seeing images of animals on the run, of people who have to leave their homes and perhaps lose them, it overwhelms me. I wish I could have blown away the rain that has fallen in my region over the last few days and directed it where it could have helped minimize the damage.

Animals already have less and less territory because of urban sprawl and all those who favor a lush, uniform lawn over botanical diversity, so the fires add to their distress and mine.

I have no idea whether these fires are of natural origin - lightning - or human - neglect - and frankly I'd rather not know. To learn that a campfire has been badly extinguished, or that a cigarette butt has been thrown onto dry material, would make my bruised heart bleed even more.

Although I've always been sensitive to these disasters, yet helpless in the face of them, today I know I can make a real difference.
