Biography

Born in 1975 in Montreal, where he still lives, Sébastien Lachapelle is a self-taught digital artist who has mastered complex photo manipulation.

Sébastien fell into the visual arts at a very early age. Around the age of 10, his major interest and talent for drawing and crafting led him to enroll in the "Fine Arts - Youth" workshops at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. And from there, a passion was born.

After high school, he turned to visual arts. In addition to a year of studies in presentation design at the Collège du Vieux-Montréal, he obtained a certificate in advertising design from the Académie des arts de Montréal. Afterwards, a training in 3D animation at Interdec College, a division of the Lasalle Group, allowed him to discover a real infatuation for digital art and graphic design.

In 2017, he gave up his bread-and-butter job to devote himself full time to his art and has been refining his techniques ever since.

One of his highlights was creating a mural in 2021 for the store of a very satisfied client who had given him carte blanche. More recently, in June 2022, two of his paintings were selected for a collage competition at the John B. Aird Gallery in Toronto, followed by a virtual exhibition.

Artistic approach

Photo manipulation can be defined as an amalgam of photography, graphic design and digital editing. This technique requires great skill and precision in the use of Photoshop and other tools, a lot of research and a good dose of patience. It is one of the most creative art forms to come out of digital.

Over the years, especially with the help of tutorials, Sébastien has developed a signature of his own and his creations are matched only by his overflowing imagination.

His style lives between reality and comics, and he uses a palette of bright or contrasting colors, always in harmony with the theme of the work. Diversified and eclectic, from playful art to surrealism, his projects are often the result of the inspiration of the moment. His major sources of inspiration are cinema, Pop Art and American comics, as well as traditional illustration (e.g. Norman Rockwell).

Sébastien's motto, and the message he wishes to convey, is that in the end, it doesn't have to look real. What is important is that the image says something, and above all, that it is pleasing to the eye.
