Biography

Florence Laurent is a French painter living in the heart of the Montpellier scrubland in the south of France. She has always been very sensitive to art and aesthetics and has given a large place to painting in her life while pursuing higher studies in science (engineering and thesis) and then devoting herself to her family. Today, she dedicates her life entirely to her passion, her quest for meaning and sharing.

A self-taught painter, she has attended numerous workshops with renowned painters. She has trained in landscape painting, still life, and drawing of live models. To her skills in the field of realistic figuration, she then added a very personal expression from her imagination.

Florence Laurent opens the doors of her studio every year and regularly participates in regional group exhibitions. For the past 2 years, she has been devoting all her time and energy to her work as a professional.

Artistic approach

For Florence LAURENT, the imagination is filled with symbolic images, images that she lets appear in her paintings. During an unconscious process she welcomes these symbols, builds abstract landscapes from an emotional dialogue with colors. The state of meditative communion that she feels in front of the mystery of Creation, she tries to find it again at the moment of the act of painting. To do this, she disregards the exterior and lets instinct, gesture and letting go guide her hand. A kind of improvisation that makes room for the feeling, the unconscious and gives birth to an emotional aesthetic space. Thereafter, she observes her canvas with a wise eye and a reflection takes place which gives meaning to the forms, colors and traces present. She deconstructs or reconstructs the composition, gives depth, works the nuances while always preserving the vital energy from the first draft.

All kinds of autobiographical landscapes born of the unconscious and emotion come to life. Ancestral symbols appear such as the mountain, the spiral, the bird... They speak to us of life cycles, of time, of the relationship between man and nature, of spirituality, of preservation of endangered species...

The disappearance of the biodiversity on earth and its recent actuality concerning the birds, marked its last paintings with the appearance in particular of 2 symbols: the bird and the spiral.

The bird, symbol of freedom, recalls a happy, peaceful, carefree and free childhood. The freedom that the painter finds in the act of painting, the freedom to create a dreamlike world, the liberation from existential anguish and the awareness of time that escapes us. The song of the bird in spring is a rebirth of Life.

The spiral also evokes the origin of life and its cycles, it evokes the passing of time and the urgency to act!

The proposed paintings reflect the two aspects of the urgency to act in order to preserve or regain a peaceful and benevolent world: the pastel colors evoke the softness, the beauty of an idyllic garden, the black charcoal line and the gestures remind the speed of the danger of extinction.

Her marked interest in art history allows her to enrich her work with chords of colors, effects of materials, glazes, etc. Painters such as Kandinsky, Odilon Redon, Hans Hartung, Cézanne, Gauguin have influenced her work. She mainly uses acrylic paint because it allows a wide range of effects with which she likes to play: impastos, sgraffiti, dilutions, glazes, drips ... Acrylic is sometimes combined with pastels, ink. For support, she uses canvas, cardboard or wood.
